Hiring a private investigator for the first time can feel uncertain. Understanding the process, from the initial consultation through the final report, helps you work more effectively with your investigator and sets realistic expectations about timelines, costs, and outcomes.

Key Points

Initial consultation is typically free and confidential
Written retainer agreement defines scope, rate, and terms
Investigations are conducted discreetly, you are not involved
Regular updates are provided throughout the investigation
Final report includes written summary and video/photo evidence
Evidence is documented in court-admissible format
Timelines vary by case type, surveillance may take days or weeks
Your PI works for you, not law enforcement

The Initial Consultation

The process begins with a free, confidential consultation, typically by phone. During this call, you describe your situation, what you need documented, and what outcome you are hoping to achieve. Your PI will assess whether an investigation is feasible, what methods are appropriate, and provide an honest estimate of timeline and cost.

Watson PI offers free consultations by phone at 512-801-9754. All information shared is strictly confidential.

The Retainer Agreement

Before work begins, you will sign a written retainer agreement that defines: the scope of the investigation; the hourly rate and expense reimbursement policy; the retainer amount required to begin; reporting requirements and format; and confidentiality obligations.

Read the retainer agreement carefully and ask questions before signing. A reputable PI will welcome your questions and provide clear, direct answers.

During the Investigation

Once the investigation begins, your role is to stay out of it. Do not follow the subject yourself, do not contact witnesses, and do not discuss the investigation with anyone who does not need to know. Your PI will provide regular updates and contact you immediately if anything significant is discovered.

The Final Report

At the conclusion of the investigation, you will receive a detailed written report summarizing the findings, along with all photographic and video evidence. Reports are formatted to meet Texas Rules of Evidence standards and are suitable for use in court, mediation, or attorney review.

Key Takeaways

  • The initial consultation is free, confidential, and sets expectations for the investigation.
  • A written retainer agreement protects both you and your PI, read it carefully.
  • Stay out of the investigation once it begins, let your PI do their job.
  • Regular updates keep you informed without compromising the investigation.
  • The final report is formatted for court use and includes all evidence gathered.
